What are Celtic Rainforests?

Celtic Rainforests are extremely rare habitats.

These forests are only found in areas close to the sea—making Eryri the perfect place for such habitats. The conditions in these areas are perfect for rare plants, lichens and forest fungi to grow.

These forests are also referred to as Temperate Forests or Atlantic Forests.

Celtic Rainforests are believed to be under greater threat than tropical rainforests

Celtic Rainforests Project

LIFE Celtic Rainforests project is a conservation project led by The National Park Authority and other partners working within the National Park.

This £7 million project protects and restores Eryri’s Celtic rainforests.

Project objectives

Protecting and celebrating Eryri’s Celtic Rainforests.

Managing invasive species
Invasive species such as Rhododendron can negatively affect the natural ecology of woodlands and forests.
Restoring ancient oak forests
Undertaking conservation work to restore ancient oak forests.
Reintroducing grazing animals to woodlands
Letting animals such as cattle graze in woodlands is an effective way of maintaining and managing rainforests.
