Both Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl can be accessed from the Pyg Track, which begins at Pen y Pass.
This is NOT a primary route to summit Yr Wyddfa, and it should only be taken if you are specifically aiming to reach Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl. If you intend to reach the summit of Yr Wyddfa while avoiding both peaks, continue along the clearly defined Pyg Track and over the stiles (heading southwest).
Experienced walkers and climbers tend to approach Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl from east to west due to the nature of the climb and the natural direction of travel for most climbers.
Safety Advice
Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl are both Grade 1 scrambles which involves elements of rock climbing, requiring the simultaneous use of both hands and feet. The route involves navigating extremely challenging terrain including a knife edged ridge with significant exposure, including steep pinnacles and steep drops on both sides. The exposed nature of the scramble often leads to climbers becoming ‘crag fast’, meaning they become stranded, unable to ascend or descend.
This scramble is not suitable for inexperienced walkers and mountaineers or in wet and windy weather. Unfortunately, accidents are common with many individuals needing assistance from Mountain Rescue, and tragically, there have been fatalities. For safety reasons, dogs should not be taken on this route under any circumstances.
Before you ascend – Be #Adventure Smart and ask yourself these three questions:
- – Am I confident I have the KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS for the day?
- – Do I know what the WEATHER will be like?
- – Do I have the right GEAR?
If you are uncertain of your ability or the weather then please reconsider your options and seek professional advice/assistance.
